The Minnie Pearl Cancer Foundation Announces Year of Celebration for 2012

The Minnie Pearl Cancer Foundation (MPCF), a national nonprofit organization offering FREE and compassionate support, education and one-on-one guidance to adults facing cancer, has much to celebrate in 2012. In addition to celebrating 25 years of service, the MPCF is celebrating what would have been Minnie Pearl’s 100th birthday. In honor of these milestones MPCF announced today the launch of its “Minnie Moments” campaign.

The “Minnie Moments” campaign will feature stories from the clients, survivors and caregivers who have used MPCF’s services, as well as memories from celebrities and fans of Minnie Pearl. All are invited to share their “moment” at www.minniepearl.org/minniemoments. MPCF will be collecting “Minnie Moments” throughout 2012 and sharing them in newsletters, on Facebook and Twitter and at minniepearl.org.

MPCF recently sat down with U.S. State Senator of Tennessee, Lamar Alexander, to capture his “Minnie Moment.” “Minnie was always nice…She shook the last hand, she signed the last autograph, she always said something nice to the newest person on the Opry,” recalled the U.S. Senator. “She said to me one time, ‘I’ve gotten to the point in life where I don’t think people are so hot no matter how big they are if they’re not nice.’”

In addition to stories from celebrities and fans about Minnie Pearl as a performer, MPCF is capturing stories from those who know best the organization’s unique and compassionate guidance.

“Being diagnosed with cancer pushes both patients and those who care for them into a frightening place,” says Susan Earl Hosbach, Executive Director of MPCF. “MPCF is there to help them navigate their cancer journey with answers, advice and support. Minnie Pearl’s generosity and caring spirit continue to impact so many through her legacy, The Minnie Pearl Cancer Foundation…that is what we celebrate by sharing these stories.”

With a reach well beyond Nashville, MPCF served thousands of patients in 2011, from 29 states, 3 Canadian provinces and South Africa. The Vespers Release "The Fourth Wall" April 3rd ~ Two Sisters, Two Brothers ~ Infectious Folk-Pop

The Vespers are one of those lucky young bands who are becoming a word of mouth sensation though they've only quietly self-released one record. With two sisters on lead vocals and two brothers filling out the sound, the foursome are distinguished by an arsenal of instruments and the kind of harmony only siblings can create. They have toured from Boston to Austin, hitting everything from festivals to college campuses in between. On The Fourth Wall out April 3rd, they create infectious folk-pop with both the buoyancy of youth and deeper spiritual themes.

The lead vocalists Callie (21) and Phoebe Cryar (19) were brought up in a musical family in Nashville, honing their gifts as young kids singing background vocals on Music Row. While their pure harmonies are described as “ghostly and haunting” and “honey sweet,” they both have expansive characteristics to their vocal and instrumental abilities. It was a chance meeting at a campfire jam that brought the sisters an earthy grounding in brothers Bruno (20) and Taylor Jones (22), who were drawn to gritty southern rock and the depth of their father’s record collection that included soul music from the likes of Stevie Wonder.

Everyone in the band contributes to the songwriting, and the only outside track is influential bluesman Son House’s “Grinnin In Your Face,” but the most prolific writer is Phoebe who contributed to nearly every song, including “Better Now”, the record’s opening track. “I came up with the melody and Bruno pounced on it, writing the bridge that completed the song,” she shares. “It was drawn from the biblical story about the man blind from birth who was healed, and no matter how much he implored - they wouldn't believe it was possible.”

“We all grew up listening to a little bit of everything, but roots music didn't come in until more recently,” says Bruno. “Folk and roots music tend to draw from spiritual themes. We don’t run away from our faith when writing, because that's where our hearts are planted.” On “Lawdy,” the song starts out sounding like a swampy old mountain tune before growing into a full-bodied Sunday morning spiritual. “We were originally playing it really fast with drums,” says Callie, “but we slowed it down to be more bluesy. I wanted to hear that sound of Johnny Cash’s “God’s Gonna Cut You Down.'”

The Vespers also offer a full share of effervescent pop songs like “Will You Love Me” and “Flower Flower.” Callie and Bruno wrote the latter when he said he needed a “summertime jam.” Callie hummed a melody, and the tune quickly sprung up on the banjo, ukulele, drums and bass. “Most of our songs come about really organically like that, without planning to write. It just happens and we try to let it flow,” says Bruno.

“Got No Friends” is a tip of the hat to the bluegrass genre. “We cut the first half live around one microphone, which was a first for us,” says Taylor. “That song was written right after the Nashville flood, and right as I learned to play mandolin after our family business flooded. Our world was really shook up after that May (2010). The flood eventually inspired us to quit our other day jobs, school, and pursue music full time, on a leap of faith.”

Most of the songs have the energy of a live show because the band polished them on the road, where they also came up with the album title. The fourth wall, in theatre terms, is the invisible wall between the audience and performers. “Our music reflects that. We decided to go on tour shortly after we joined forces and we really learned what our band was all about while playing to the people at our early shows. It shaped us and that’s how we really became ‘The Vespers.’ It's all about connecting with people and breaking down that invisible wall,” Says Callie.

The Vespers will be on tour this Spring covering the right-hand side of the map beginning with a showcase at the Folk Alliance in Memphis. Dates are being added currently at www. thevespersband.com

13th ANNUAL SAN FRANCISCO BLUEGRASS AND OLD-TIME FESTIVAL PRESENTS TEN DAYS OF BLUEGRASS RUCKUS, OLD-TIME FUN AND ASS-KICKIN' AMERICANA AND ROOTS MUSIC

The eclectic blend of events booked for the 13th annual San Francisco Bluegrass and Old-Time Festival (SFBOT) will raise up a bluegrass ruckus, create some old-time fun and guarantee some ass kickin' music through performances, dances and workshops. The 10-day festival runs from Feb. 10-19 and comprises more than 30 shows at numerous small clubs around the Bay Area featuring some of the most talented musicians on the Americana and Roots music scene today.

Highlights of this year’s festival includes Bay Area favorites such as The Brothers Comatose, The Crooked Jades, Earl White String Band and the Kathy Kallick Quartet. Also featured are out-of-town bands; Foghorn Stringband, Cahalen Morrison & Eli West, and making their SFBOT debut, The Deadly Gentlemen (epic folk and grasscore out of Boston!). The Deadly Gentlemen consists of band members: Greg Liszt on banjo (from Crooked Still), Mike Barnett (from David Grisman Quintet/toured w/Jesse McReynolds) on fiddle, Dominick Leslie on mandolin, Stash Wyslouch on guitar and Sam Grisman on upright bass (son of mandolinist David Grisman).

For the first time the festival will feature a band contest which will bring out some of the up-and-coming new Northern California Bluegrass and Old-Time bands. There is a lot of excitement about this contest and it is expected to be a regular addition to the festival.

In addition to shows, the festival aims to provide rich experiences for Bay Area residents through workshops, jam sessions, kids shows, Bluegrass and Old-Time in the Schools and the Saturday night old-time square dance (always a sell-out with over 220 attendees)! Each year the Festival showcases the best in rising acts from the West Coast and beyond, with a special spotlight on the immense amount of local talent located right here in the Bay Area.

Thanks to a generous investment from the Chris and Warren Hellman Foundation, the festival committee continues its commitment to the Bluegrass and Old-time in the Schools program. The program aims to expose elementary and high school students to the worlds of bluegrass and old-time music and continue the legacy of this important music. First Aid Kit Unveil Official Video for New Single 'Emmylou'

First Aid Kit have unveiled the official video for their brand new single 'Emmylou'. Set for release on 14th February via Wichita Records, the new single pays tribute to some of First Aid Kit's favourite country musicians including Emmylou Harris, Gram Parsons, June Carter and Johnny Cash, and was filmed in Joshua Tree National Park on Gram Parsons' birthday.

Following the release of 'Emmylou', First Aid Kit, aka Swedish sisters Klara and Johanna Söderberg, will head over to the UK for a six date tour at the end of February.

South Austin’s K Phillips is releasing American Girls on Feb 14, 2012. On this debut, there are no pick-up trucks, red cups, or girls in jean shorts. Phillips champions the desperate, the sleazy and the broken, with small-town murals that glimpse into the jealousy of a sheriff, lovers that freeze to death and a crude lothario that misquotes dead poets. His primary instrument is the Hammond B-3, drawing from southern soul, funk and blues. “You could imagine the Muscle Shoals horns filling out the arrangements. He sounded as good on spooky slide guitar as he did invoking gospel and soul on the piano,” said Gene Armstrong of Tucson Weekly of a recent live show.

Phillips drew his “West Texas dream-team” for American Girls including Bobby Keys, Jimmy Pettit, Bukka Allen, Rick Richards, and Kevin McKinney – cutting the album live in just four days. I have to confess...I received this cd over a month ago and it's been in my car player ever since. I can't stop listening to it. What am I supposed to do? is such a complete album that on first listen I was half-way through it the second time before I realized it. Every track blends so well into the next that I just kept listening, I'm still listening.

The songs are soulful, mournful, wistful and above all, tuneful. Don (Doop) Duprie is an extraordinary writer and the Inside Outlaws provide the perfect soundtrack to the stories Don tells through his songs. Songs about karma - 'Heartbreaker', love - 'Give It To You', regret - 'Not Too Late', economic depression/frustration - 'What Am I Supposed to Do', and life's lessons learned the hard way - 'Hard Way'.

From the opener, 'Heartbreaker', through to the closer, 'Salt of the Earth', (yes the Stones song, only better, it serves as a toast to the people Doop writes about) What am I supposed to do? puts life in the 21st century in perspective with a good old 20th century country rock feel and some of the sweetest pedal steel guitar I've heard in quite some time.

If you've ever been laid off, blown off, pissed off or pissed on you'll find a song on this album that fits the mood. If you've ever broken somebody's heart or had your heart broken, you'll find songs about that too. And, if you just want to rock and roll sometimes, Pete Ballard (electric guitar/pedal steel guitar) will tell you about it on 'You Gotta Rock and Roll Sometimes', a rock-a-billy boogie that must surely be a show-stopper live!

A personal favorite is 'Not Too Late', (a duet featuring Alison Lewis) that tells the story of former lovers still yearning for each other years later:

"Sometimes love it fades away

I always hoped ours would one day

But it stays on me just like a scar

I wish I had on this broken heart

Every time I step into that bar

Every time I hear those old songs play

Every time I start to drink that whiskey

I wonder if it's not too late..."

It's been six years since the release of her well-received debut album ...This Side of Yesterday, but this month marks the return of indie-folk singer/songwriter Martha Berner with her long-awaited full-length follow-up Fool's Fanatsy along with her new band The Significant Others.

The entire album was recorded at Chicago’s premiere digital recording studio Stranded On A Planet with producer & Significant Others' guitarist Scott Fritz, and was mastered by four-time Grammy Award winner Gavin Lurssen (Robert Plant & Alison Krauss, Cat Power, Tom Waits, Leonard Cohen, etc). While this new material still incorporates the Chicago-based musician's trademark whiskey-and-honey vocals and thought-provoking subjects that stretch across folk, pop and Americana, Fool’s Fantasy marks Martha's first true band effort - incorporating elements of Stax soul, insurgent country and the unbridled passion of late ‘60s rock-n-roll.

Bassist Jack Casady was honored with a Lifetime Achievement Award on October 22 at Bass Player Live! in Los Angeles, continuing a tradition Bass Player started in 1998 that has honored top players.

It was an epic night at the Key Club in West Hollywood, California on October 22, 2011. “I think now so many years, so much treasure in the bank in the world of bass guitar…I must pay homage to Jack Casady as one of the towering figures in the comprehensive history of the bass. As far as original conception, well played, superbly applied, there are but few players with the kind of originality and power as Jack Casady has,” said Antony Jackson.

After the moving induction speech by Anthony Jackson, session bassist for the likes of Chick Corea, Steely Dan, Paul Simon, and many others, Casady was presented with the award which he took in touching tribute to wife his Diana. “When you find somebody in your life that grounds you it just makes everything better. It makes you play better, makes you think better and makes you a better human being,” said Casady.

Casady then proceeded to offer anecdotes on the various paths throughout his career before performing a ferocious forty-five minute acoustic duo set with Hot Tuna mate, Jorma Kaukonen.

"One of the most original innovators in the sixty-year history of the bass guitar, Jack Casady made his sweeping melodic mark circa 1965, helping to create the “San Francisco sound” with legendary rock group Jefferson Airplane. Jack would go on to track with Jimi Hendrix, Crosby, Stills, Nash & Young, Warren Zevon, members of the Grateful Dead, John Lee Hooker, Gov’t Mule, and Rusted Root. That same weekend, Epiphone set up shop in LA at SIR Studios for Bass Player LIVE! where Casady stopped by to greet the lucky winner of an Ebony Jack Casady Signature bass and hang out.

Jack worked several years with Epiphone R&D to make his signature bass a reality. "I did a lot of homework and bench testing and finally when it clicked in right, it was great." Billy Burnette Debuts On Americana Chart Prior To Rockabilly HOF Induction

Billy Burnette recorded his first single at age 7, recorded a song with Herb Alpert at 11, toured Japan at 13, and started an album career at 18. He starred in movies, and wrote hit songs for Ray Charles & Bonnie Raitt, Roy Orbison, Tammy Wynette, Faith Hill, Cher, Jerry Lee Lewis, The Everly Brothers, Loretta Lynn, Fleetwood Mac, Glen Campbell, George Strait (Strait's 44^th number one last year) and more. He recorded and toured as part of Fleetwood Mac for 8 years, was a guitarist in Bob Dylan’s band - and more recently with John Fogerty. But what Burnette really loves to do is make rockabilly music.

His just released first studio album in a decade is filled with original songs and plenty of rockabilly. Rock N Roll With It, released digitally in June was a featured release on iTunes for almost a month and just debuted at #30 on the Americana Music Charts. And, on November 12, he will be inducted into the International Rockabilly Hall of Fame in Jackson, TN. He ought to be, the style was actually named after him.

Burnette is the “Billy” in the term “rockabilly.” Born in Memphis, along with cousin Rocky, the boys were the inspiration for “Rock Billy Boogie” recorded by his father and uncle known as “Johnny Burnette And The Rock And Roll Trio” in 1957. The Burnettes wrote monster hits like “Train Kept A-Rollin” “You’re Sixteen,” “It’s Late,” and influenced the careers of Elvis Presley, The Beatles, The Yardbirds and others. “Elvis used to spend many evenings jamming with the band,” recalls Billy. “I met Paul McCartney and he said that the Trio were one of his and John’s (Lennon’s) influences – nobody was making music like that back then.”

“My dad’s music seems to have an energy all its own, and this is the style I enjoy playing the most. And I thought it was time for me to do an album like this, and give people some real rockabilly,” shares Burnette. “This describes, for the first time in a long time, who I really am - all I can say is it's what I do and it's part of my DNA.”

“I wrote the title track, it says it all really. Just go with it, let it go. It should be easy to roll with some good music.” It’s also the name of the recording label he’s started, which is already meeting with success. The only ballad-type song on the record, “Only The River Knows,” is featured in the movie Blue Crush 2. “It’s kind of my tribute to Roy Orbison. It’s one of my favorite songs now.”

“I have been so blessed just to make a living out of making music all of my life,” says Burnette. “But being inducted into the Rockabilly Hall of Fame is an incredible honor, as it takes me back to the very beginning and the musical influence my father passed on to me.”

In addition, to celebrate the holidays Burnette re-cut and re-wrote the title track as a Christmas single. “Rock And Roll In Christmas” was just released, and a portion of the proceeds will benefit St Judes Children’s Research Hospital.
